It was Mary Katrantzou’s first ever stand-alone show but she didn’t disappoint. Instead, she surprised everyone with the simple idea that came to her mind. She used interiors as inspiration for her Spring/ Summer 2011 collection.
As Mary Katrantzou explained after the Spring/ Summer 2011 fashion show she’d been looking at the highly stylized seventies photography of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin and suddenly realized she wanted to show the room on a woman rather than a woman in the room.
She said:
With this collection, I wanted to put the room on the woman, rather than the woman in the room.”
What she did was fantastic, a real work of art. The outfits in Mary Katrantzou Spring/ Summer 2011 looked a bit surreal but at the same time they were absolutely wearable. We saw lampshade skirts with dangling pendants of crystal, prints featuring swimming pools, balconies, dining-tables, window frames, etc. Great job!
